Qualcomm Inc. on Tuesday announced a new flagship smartphone chip that incorporates improved gaming and photo capabilities. It will be manufactured by Samsung’s chip maker (Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.).
The 5G chip called Snapdragon 888 is on top of Qualcomm’s mobile phone processors. Chip-enabled smartphones are expected to be launched in the first quarter of next year.
High quality Android phones from Xiaomi Corp and LG Electronics Inc are expected to use the chip.
For the first time, Samsung is competing with Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer (TSMC) to build Qualcomm’s flagship chip with a new 5 – nanometer smartphone chip process. Earlier this year, the South Korean company won a contract for 5G chips from Qualcomm.
Apple’s new iPhones also use a chip made with 5-nanometer technology, but analysts believe that the ISN chips are made by TSMC.
Alex Katusian, senior vice president of Qualcomm’s mobile, computing and infrastructure projects, said this year’s chip is focused on improving overall work.
The new chip can process up to 120 high-resolution photos per second, while the chip’s new Artificial Intelligence processor software allows you to select the top five photos and integrate them into one final image.
Katsusian announced that orders for the Snapdragon 888 will not be split between Samsung and TSMC, adding that Samsung is best suited for this chip in terms of design requirements and timeframe.
“I think it would be too bad if you had to split your resources between two different productions for a given chip,” he said. “We work hard with the manufacturers and are very confident in what we want to use a few years before the chip comes out.”
