“CSAA is doing all we can to ensure that the health, safety and well-being of all players and support staff involved in this series is our priority,” said South African Cricket Director Graeme Smith.

“With that in mind, we have made the joint decision to cancel today’s match. We apologize for the inconvenience we found ourselves after spending the time and energy to host a successful tour.

“We are in constant discussion with the ECB as we navigate the situation under the guidance of our integrated medical teams.”

Sky Sports Cricket Michael Atherton said: “There is a suspicion that the results may be false-positive – reading is unusual, who knows? They sent those results to confirm or not, it’s important.

“If two members of the touring party are confirmed to be positive, it will be very difficult for these games to go ahead with the tour. If the touring party is clear that they are falsely positive, they may have a chance to complete the tour.

“I think [two games] The best we can expect – there’s no way you can get three games right now, I don’t think it’s practical.

“Players will get some relief if those results come back as false positives to make sure everything is right, so a two-day postponement to Tuesday will be allowed on Wednesday.

“But it all depends on these two Tests. If they come back positive, I’m afraid the tour will go on, and then there are significant questions about whether those players should continue.”

Roy Davis, general manager of the Vineyard Hotel, said in a statement that staff had tested positive on Friday and had since been isolated.

The Vineyard Hotel can confirm that two staff members tested positive for Kovid-19 on Friday, December 4, following a positive test by the South African player on Thursday, December 3rd.

“Our number one priority is the safety and well-being of our staff and guests, and we have made every effort to investigate and resolve the situation.

“Staff members and a player who tested positive on Friday are isolated in on – site apartments a short distance from the hotel, which are disinfected and available for this purpose.”
